Are You Prepared for a Natural Disaster?

While everyone is at risk during a natural weather-related disaster or similar emergency, older adults can be especially vulnerable during these challenging times. Planning in advance can help you stay calm and evacuate efficiently, if and when the time comes. Try these tips:

  • Evaluate. Learn about the kinds of disasters most likely to affect you based on where you live. This will help you understand what you might need to include in your plan.
  • Plan. Develop an evacuation plan that includes possible routes and locations of shelters. Discuss your plan with friends, family, caregivers, and neighbors.
  • Prepare. Stock an emergency kit with the essentials you need for three to seven days. Consider any special health or medical needs you may have, like access to certain medications or medical devices.
