Exercise Safely in Cold Weather

You can benefit from exercising at any time of the year, even during winter. Before you brave the cold, take a few extra steps to stay safe:

  • Check the weather forecast. If it’s very windy or too cold, exercise indoors.
  • Warm up your muscles before you exercise outside. Try walking or light arm pumping.
  • Wear several layers of loose clothing. If it’s snowy or rainy, wear a waterproof coat or jacket.

For these and other tips on exercising in cold weather, watch this video from the National Institute on Aging.
