Carbondale

Dementia Friendly Carbondale brings together civic and community leaders, along with local residents for a common goal of increasing dementia awareness.  Some of the partners include the City of Carbondale, Southern Illinois University, Alzheimer’s Association, Prairie Living of Chautauqua, NAACP, Golden Rainbows of Illinois South, and Southern Illinois Healthcare.  As a result of our partnerships, our team has seen an increase in caregiver and dementia-specific support groups, as well as Memory Cafes.  Our team has also organized dementia friends training for a variety of businesses and city and community organizations, thereby increasing dementia awareness in Carbondale, Illinois.

Dementia Friendly Activities

The Carbondale Dementia Friendly Task Force plans to develop and/or strengthen resource materials, educational programs, their memory café, and sector training. Several on the Task Force have become a Dementia Champion and they will work to increase the number of Dementia Friends in their area. The Egyptian Area Agency on Aging has a system for surveying the community members and which will be utilized to assess strength, weaknesses. Listening sessions will also be conducted.
