Three Types of Exercise and Physical Activity

Research has shown that it’s important to get all three types of exercise: aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and balance. Adults should do muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week and at least 150 minutes (2 1/2 hours) a week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. In addition, older adults benefit from balance exercises and doing a combination of all three types of activity.
