What is Respite Care?

Caregiving can be challenging for both the caregiver and the person receiving care. Respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers, giving them time to rest, travel, or spend time with other family and friends.

Respite care provided by a friend, relative, or volunteer may have no associated costs. Professional services charge by the hour, or the number of days or weeks their service is provided. Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs may cover some of the costs of respite care under specific circumstances.
