Extend the Healthy, Active Years of Life With These Tips

Many different factors influence healthy aging. Research in this area suggests that certain actions can help you manage your health, live as independently as possible, and maintain quality of life as you grow older. For example, try to:

  • Get moving with exercise and physical activity. Scientific evidence suggests that people who exercise regularly not only live longer, but also enjoy more years of life without pain or disability. You can increase the number of steps you get each day by doing activities such as walking the dog or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Make healthy food choices. Choosing healthier food options can help protect you from certain health problems as you age and may even help improve brain function. Small changes, like adding more fish or leafy greens to your diet, can improve health outcomes.
  • Take care of your mental health. Mental health, or mental wellness, is essential to your overall health and quality of life. Staying connected with others, in person or over the phone, is one way you can help boost mood and improve your overall well-being.
