NIA Announces a Summer Virtual Meeting Series to Engage the Dementia Care Community

As part of the annual Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias events hosted by NIH, NIA was set to host the 2020 Dementia Care, Caregiving, and Services summit this past March. While the COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing guidance kept us from hosting that meeting as planned, we have been hard at work thinking about how to engage summit participants virtually. NIA is excited to announce we will be taking our care and caregiving conversations online through the Dementia Care, Caregiving, and Services Research Summit Virtual Meeting Series this summer.

The Virtual Meeting Series

The virtual meeting series will offer three online sessions featuring research presentations, panelist remarks, moderated dialogue with participants, and discussion about research gaps and opportunities across various themes.

The series will take place via Zoom the afternoons of July 10, July 21, and August 13, 2020. For anyone who is unable to join during those times, these meetings will be recorded and archived for later viewing. Visit the summit website to view the agenda, register, and learn more about how to connect during the series.

Incorporating your Insights and Perspectives

One of the main goals of the series is to provide opportunities for individuals across the community — including people living with dementia, care partners, researchers, care providers, and advocacy organizations — to share perspectives on the future of dementia care and caregiving research. The 2020 Summit Steering Committee, with input from NIA stakeholder groups, developed a draft document to identify critical scientific gaps and potential areas for future research.

Join the conversation by sharing your thoughts on the draft research gaps and opportunities and submitting questions for the Summit Virtual Meeting Series through our Request for Information. Visit our website to learn more and provide input.

People living with dementia and their care partners face daily challenges, which are certainly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has also presented new challenges for recruitment and retention of participants in this important intervention research. We hope this virtual series will be an opportunity for all interested parties to come together, discuss critical issues and challenges, and strategize on how best to rise above them. We look forward to your input and to connecting virtually this summer!
