Hot Weather Safety for People with Alzheimer’s Disease

Hot weather can be dangerous for older people, including people with Alzheimer’s disease. There are ways you can help keep the person safe during the summer months: Hot weather can be dangerous for older people, including people with Alzheimer’s disease.

  • People with Alzheimer’s may wear the wrong clothing for the season. Make sure to offer weather-appropriate clothing choices when going out in the heat.
  • Watch for signs of dehydration. These may include dry mouth, dizziness, rapid heart rate, and hallucinations. Don’t forget that hallucinations may also be caused by Alzheimer’s itself. Be aware of how much fluid the person is drinking and offer fluids throughout the day.
  • If the person lives alone, check in daily to make sure that they are staying cool and hydrated.
