Illinois has achieved a remarkable distinction: 15,000 registered Dementia Friends statewide. These 15,000 Illinoisans have joined a global movement that aims to change the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Every person who completes the Dementia Friend training learns about the disease and then turns that understanding into action. The trainings, offered both online and in-person, help community members identify tangible steps they can take individually and collectively to improve the lived experience of persons with dementia and their support systems.
This milestone comes soon after another major achievement for Illinois. Earlier this year, Illinois reached 50 nationally recognized Dementia Friendly Communities, solidifying the state as a leader in the nationwide effort. These movements have worked hand in hand. Throughout all areas of the state, urban and rural, these communities have committed themselves to a grass-roots effort to educate and train more Dementia Friends, one person at a time. Each Dementia Friend walks away with a dedication to fight the stigma against dementia and make their communities more welcoming places.
From telling friends about the Dementia Friends program, taking time to visit someone you know living with dementia, or educating your coworkers on how to make your workplace more accommodating for those living with dementia, there are so many ways you can contribute to creating a dementia-friendly community. Every action counts. And we all have a part, anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.
