Extreme heat is not safe for anyone, but it is particularly dangerous for older adults. Hotter days can make it difficult for the body to regulate its temperature. Older adults tend to not adjust as well as others to sudden temperature changes.
However, there are things you can do to help you stay safe and lower your risk of heat-related illness. A couple things to help you stay cool are:
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of liquids, such as water, fruit or vegetable juices, or drinks that contain electrolytes.
- Keep your living space as cool as possible. Limit use of the oven; keep shades, blinds, or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day; and open windows at night.
- Dress for the weather. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Natural fabrics such as cotton may feel cooler than synthetic fibers.
