Healthy and Active Lifestyle Tips for Those Living with Dementia

Although living with dementia presents unique challenges, there are steps you can take to feel better, stay social, maintain a healthy weight, and keep regular sleep habits.

Try these tips:

  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Several short “mini workouts” throughout the day may be best. Even everyday activities like gardening or household chores can help you stay active. Be realistic about how much activity you can do at one time.
  • Avoid added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium. Choose nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean sources of protein and dairy products.
  • Mix in endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises in your routine. Try walking, dancing, standing on one foot, or stretching.
  • Stay social. Find an online support group, talk or video chat with family and friends, or walk in your neighborhood.
