Types of Health Care Providers Involved in Dementia Care

The first point of contact for people with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia is often a health care professional. They provide care, support, and resources for people living with dementia. Some of the health care professionals who may be involved in diagnosing and providing care include:

  • Geriatric psychiatrists who specialize in the mental and emotional well-being of older adults 
  • Neuropsychologists who specialize in the assessment of cognition and behaviors 
  • Speech, physical, and occupational therapists who specialize in improving communication skills 
  • Clinical psychologists and social workers who specialize in understanding, diagnosing, and treating mental health and behavior disorders
