Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. It’s important to know that people with Alzheimer’s progress at different rates and stages after their diagnosis. Stages of the disease include:
- Early-stage Alzheimer’s. In this stage of Alzheimer’s, memory loss and cognitive difficulties appear gradually. People are often diagnosed at this stage of the disease.
- Middle-stage Alzheimer’s. During this stage, damage to the brain causes confusion and people with Alzheimer’s have difficulty recognizing family and friends.
- Late-stage Alzheimer’s. When a person reaches this stage of Alzheimer’s, they often can no longer communicate and may be completely dependent on a caretaker when it comes to their daily needs.
Throughout the course of the disease, a person’s symptoms may worsen and then improve, but their abilities will continue to decline over time.
