Living With Dementia: Healthy and Active Lifestyle Tips

Dementia has several symptoms, including changes in thinking, remembering, reasoning, and behavior. Living with dementia presents unique challenges, but a few small steps can help you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Use these tips to build healthy habits:

  • Try to be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day. Several short “mini-workouts” throughout the day may be best. Even everyday activities like gardening or household chores help you stay active.
  • Aim for a mix of endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Try a mix of walking, dancing, standing on one foot, or stretching.
  • Avoid added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium. Choose nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean sources of protein and dairy products.
  • Stay social. Find an online support group, talk or video chat with family and friends, or go for a walk in your neighborhood.
