Can Artificial Intelligence Predict Progression of Cognitive Impairment to Alzheimer’s?

An artificial intelligence (AI) speech analysis system evaluated transcripts of speech from past cognitive tests and predicted the progression of cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease within six years with more than 78% accuracy.

The 166 participants were part of the Framingham Heart Study and had been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The transcripts were divided into two subgroups based on the level of cognitive impairment progression: 90 progressive cases and 76 stable ones.

The researchers view this as validating the potential of AI speech analysis as a convenient, inexpensive cognitive testing resource that can be used remotely to complement other tests and biomarkers. They suggest that this method is more accurate than other noninvasive tests and can help medical and research professionals more easily identify people at risk of MCI progressing to Alzheimer’s.
