Recognizing the Signs: How to Know When an Older Adult Needs Help

It’s not always clear when an older adult in your life needs help. One of the best ways to know what someone needs is to ask them directly, but there are other signs that may indicate someone needs extra support. These include:

  • Changes at home. Make sure the person can prepare meals on a stove safely, that their home is relatively clean, and that they take their medications as needed.
  • Mental health concerns. Seek immediate help if the person says they feel hopeless, have no reason to live, or if you are worried they may harm themselves.
  • Memory issues. Changes in cognitive ability, personality, or decision-making could indicate a serious condition that needs medical attention.
  • Other health concerns. These may include difficulty walking or getting around, significant weight gain or loss, confusion, social isolation, and poor hygiene.
