What are Common Misconceptions About Aging?

Many people make assumptions about what it’s like to grow “old” and how aging will affect them. Understanding the positive aspects of aging, and the challenges, is important as you age. Some common misconceptions include:

  • Misconception: Depression is a normal part of aging.
    • Fact: Depression is not a normal part of aging. However, some older adults may feel isolated and alone, which may lead to depression, anxiety, or sadness.
  • Misconception: My parent or other close relative has Alzheimer’s disease, so I am guaranteed to develop it.
    • Fact: Your chance of developing Alzheimer’s may be higher if you have a family history of dementia, but it does not necessarily mean that you will develop the disease.
  • Misconception: I’ve smoked for too long to see any health benefits if I quit.
    • Fact: Quitting can lead to fewer illnesses, breathing more easily, and more energy.
