How to Support Healthy Aging in Older Family Members

You may worry about an older family member as they age. Aging increases the risk of many chronic diseases, but adopting and maintaining a few key behaviors can help older adults live longer and healthier lives. It’s never too late to start! Use these tips to promote healthy habits:

  • Prevent social isolation and loneliness. Help your relative find activities in their community, such as a club or class at their local senior center.
  • Promote physical activity. Suggest a mix of activities, such as walking around the neighborhood, lifting weights, gardening, and stretching.
  • Encourage healthy eating. Visit once a week and make a healthy meal together.
  • Schedule regular checkups with a doctor. Offer to drive or attend the appointment with your family member so you can take notes.
