Belleville

Dementia Friendly Belleville, spearheaded by the Belleville Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with its HealthCare and Community Services Committee, is a transformative community initiative driven by a dynamic, action team representing diverse sectors, such as government, community-based organizations, individuals living with dementia, healthcare providers, and law enforcement. In its initial phase, the project will concentrate on three pivotal community sectors: local businesses, the general public and law enforcement, fostering awareness, understanding, and empathy.

The Belleville Dementia Friendly Task Force represents a broad range of community members. The Task Force is comprised of people from Benedictine Senior Living, Lutheran Social Services, Hospice of Southern Illinois, The Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce, Chestnut Health Systems, AgeSmart Community Resources, Southwestern Illinois College – Programs and Services for Older Persons, Home Instead, Charter Senior Living, and Abbot EMS. Many of the task force members work with people who have dementia and will include their voice in the Dementia Friendly efforts. Also, several people in the Belleville area have become a Dementia Champion.

The Dementia Friendly Community Task Force has developed several goals and plan to focus on training for business, health care and first responders. They already have several programs in place, including Memory Cafes, Caregiver Counseling, Savvy Caregiver Trainings, and Coffee with Caregivers.
