Memory kits designed for individuals living with dementia will be available to check out of select libraries soon. The introduction of memory kits into libraries signifies a significant step towards continuing to create dementia-friendly environments and providing crucial support to families affected by memory loss. These kits serve as powerful tools for reminiscence therapy, cognitive stimulation, and meaningful engagement, fostering inclusivity and accessibility within our communities.
Memory kits are meant to facilitate meaningful connections between individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias and their caregivers. Memory kits are a collection of sensory-based activities designed to engage individuals with cognitive impairments, sparking discussions and opportunities to reflect and emotional responses. These kits vary in themes and activities, aiming to enhance mental stimulation and emotional well-being. Read more about what each kit includes below.
The following Chicago Public Library branches will have memory kits available for checkout:
- Hall Library
- West Englewood Library
- Woodson Regional Library
- Austin Library
More memory kits may be available soon at other CPL branches as the program expands. Please stay tuned on the Illinois Cognitive Resources Network website for updated information. A special thank you to the organizations involved in making these kits available: The University of Chicago’s Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center, South Loop Village, Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, The AIDS Foundation of Chicago, and the Chicago Public Library System.
