- Precision medicine data dive shows water pill may be viable to test as Alzheimer’s treatment — A commonly available, FDA-approved oral diuretic pill may be a potential candidate for an Alzheimer’s disease treatment for those who are at genetic risk.
- Tooth loss in older adults linked to higher risk of dementia — A new study found that older adults with tooth loss have a higher risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.
- Keenan Walker is NIA’s first NIH Distinguished Scholar — NIA is pleased to announce that Keenan Walker, Ph.D., has been named an NIH Distinguished Scholar.
- Neighborhood disadvantage linked to decreased well-being in older adults — An NIA-funded study found that neighborhood disadvantage is linked to lower life expectancy and overall wellness in older adults.
- Three studies link hearing loss with less physical activity among older adults — Compared to older adults with normal hearing, those with hearing loss may engage in lower levels of physical activity and may be more likely to experience a faster decline in physical function and walking endurance.
- NIA researchers comprehensively analyze clinical trial data on antibody treatments for Alzheimer’s — Researchers discovered that antibody drugs that target a protein called beta-amyloid may slightly improve memory and thinking in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
- NIA seeks deputy director — NIA seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, vision, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization.
- NIA remembers Miriam Kelty, former associate director — Miriam Kelty, Ph.D., former associate director at NIA and founder of the NIH Bioethics Interest Group, will be remembered for her unyielding dedication to advancing aging research.
- Drugs treat spinal disc degeneration in mice — Scientists reduced age-related disc degeneration in mice using an experimental drug combination that targets aging cells.
- PSAP gene found important for a neuron’s survival — Using new technologies to explore the entire genome of a human neuron, NIA-supported research discovered that the PSAP gene is needed for a neuron’s survival in oxidative stress conditions.
- Magnetic stimulation improved memory in cognitively impaired rats but harmed it in healthy peers — A new study found that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) helped improve memory deficits in lab rats with age-related cognitive decline. However, TMS damaged memory in cognitively healthy rats that had performed well on tests before treatment.
