Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias change the way people remember, think, and act. These diseases can be devastating for the individuals who have them and for their families. Agencies across the federal government support efforts to carry out the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease, a coordinated approach to accelerate research and improve care and services for individuals impacted by dementia. Three agencies in particular play a key role:
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH): Leads research to treat and ultimately prevent dementia, and to identify and test research-based supports to improve quality of life for those already living with these diseases and their families
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Focuses on creating a national public health infrastructure to increase early detection and diagnosis, reduce risk, and support dementia caregiving
- The Administration for Community Living (ACL): Partners with public and private entities to provide home and community-based services and supports for people living with dementia and their caregivers
