- Parkinson’s disease gene variant found in study of some people of African ancestry — According to an international study, funded in part by NIA, a gene variant found almost exclusively in the genomes of people of African ancestry increases the risk of developing Parkinson’s.
- Unique blood cells are linked to reduced Alzheimer’s disease risk — An NIA-funded study found that clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), a condition that changes the DNA of some blood cells and increases the risk for blood cancers and cardiovascular disease, may reduce a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
- Specialized dementia care in nursing homes linked to better outcomes for residents — According to an NIA-funded study, nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia have better outcomes when their facility specializes in dementia care. However, in most nursing homes in the United States, specialized care for people with dementia is limited.
